10 Fictional Characters who would make great geocachers

1. Gregory House, M.D., House

The grumpy but lovable diagnostician would definitely be able to solve those difficulty 5 puzzles with ease, and with a love of treasure-hunting developed as an army brat when his dad was stationed in Egypt, there is no doubt he would also love geocaching. You can bet he’d call out any cachers whose geocaching practices he didn’t agree with though!

2. Merida, Brave

The 16-year-old tomboyish princess is most at home outside and would likely go geocaching on horseback throughout the countryside. She would happily climb trees in pursuit of that smiley and frequently take the shortest route to the cache, going off the trail. She may be easily distracted from the hunt by wisps though.

3. Sherlock Holmes

Did you know that the famous detective was the inspiration for the character of Dr. House? Holmes’ no-nonsense approach to solving cases would have him FTF-ing difficult mystery caches with ease, not to mention easily extracting logs from those frustrating field puzzle boxes.

4. Katniss Everdeen, The Hunger Games

“T5 vertical rock climb cache… ok team, who’s going up?” Katniss: “I volunteer as tribute!” For those who, like me, balk at the thoughts of climbing a 20 foot tree, who better to have as your geocaching buddy than the fearless Mockingjay? She’s a great hunter too, so will have hunted out those tricky hides before you can say ‘may be the odds be ever in your favour!’

5. Doctor Who

Space and time travelling could be quite useful for a geocacher, particularly an FTF hound. No need for the Doctor to rush out the door in the middle of dinner to lift a lampost skirt, he can just jump in the TARDIS and land at GZ with minutes to spare before publication.

6. Edward Nigma (The Riddler)

Just imagine trying to crack a mystery cache set by the Riddler himself? It would certainly be a challenge for mystery-loving cachers. Fingers crossed that the puzzle wouldn’t be a prelude to a mastermind criminal plot.

7. Kalinda Sharma, The Good Wife

The inscrutable investigator Kalinda will stop at nothing to root out the information she needs, though her methods are not always entirely within the law. Kalinda the geocacher would leave no stone unturned to find the cache – her DNF rate would be very low indeed, even if it took her hours to find the hide.

8. Sheldon Cooper, The Big Bang Theory

While Dr. Sheldon Cooper’s germaphobia does not lend itself well to picking up random items in the woods or doing a fingertip search of a dirty railing, his eidetic memory, high IQ and extensive general knowledge will have him deducing tricky puzzles and cryptic hints easily, as well as setting mind-boggling D5 caches that would have you tearing your hair out.

9. Sookie Stackhouse, True Blood

Picture the scene: A geocaching event. In attendance, several FTF addicts and one wily cache owner who has devised a frustratingly difficult – as yet unfound – puzzle cache. He/she sits there with a big grin, quite pleased to have everyone completely stumped and practically begging for a morsel of a hint. Southern Belle Sookie’s ability to listen in on people’s minds would have her excusing herself early from the event to go and nab that elusive FTF!

10. Monica Geller, Friends

Monica is renowned for being super competitive so it’s easy to imagine her trawling through her statistics for hours on end and completing challenge caches before all her geofriends just so she can be the ‘winner’. She would be a stickler for the rules though. Remember: “Rules are good! Rules help control the fun.”
